Türkiye lead as Italy move into third on day two of Optimist European Team Racing Championship

The race count reaches 102 in Campione del Garda. Spain hold second, with Croatia and Poland completing the top five. Gold and Silver fleet racing begins tomorrow.

Campione del Garda, 15 October – Türkiye remain at the top of the provisional standings after the second day of the Optimist European Team Racing Championship, taking place in Campione del Garda from 13 to 17 October. Spain hold second place, while Italy move up to third ahead of Croatia and Poland.

With 102 races completed across the opening two days, the 16 competing nations are approaching the end of the round robin, with most teams having faced nearly all their opponents at least once. Tomorrow, the championship moves into its next stage with Gold and Silver fleet racing.

Morning Pelèr delivers a productive session

Lake Garda’s northerly Pelèr provided a productive morning session, allowing the race programme to move forward. The afternoon Ora proved less consistent, with the southerly breeze unable to deliver the same continuity as the morning conditions.

The total number of completed races now stands at 102, up from 68 at the close of the opening day.

Türkiye and Spain set the pace as Italy climb

Türkiye and Spain continue to set the pace, each recording 12 wins from 13 races. Türkiye hold first place in the provisional standings, ahead of the Spanish team.

Italy move from fourth to third with an overall record of 11 wins from 13 races. Matteo Faraoni, Marta Pisoni, Annalie Meoni and Filippo Nardocci take the host nation into the top three, behind the two leading teams.

Croatia sit fourth with nine wins from 12 races, followed by Poland in fifth with nine wins from 13. With teams having completed different numbers of races, the provisional standings must still be read in that context.

Switzerland lead the chasing group

Switzerland hold sixth place with eight wins from 13 races. Greece and France sit seventh and eighth respectively, both with seven wins from 12 races. Sweden and Hungary complete the top ten, followed by Denmark, Slovenia, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Portugal.

Gold and Silver fleet racing next

Day three will see the teams compete in Gold and Silver fleets, marking a new stage of the championship. The event continues through 17 October.

The Optimist European Team Racing Championship brings together 64 young sailors representing 16 nations. It is organised by Univela under the auspices of the Italian Sailing Federation, with support from Regione Lombardia and in cooperation with IODA, the International Optimist Dinghy Association.
