Training Camp on Lake Garda: Checklist

Training Camp on Lake Garda: Club Checklist

Planning a training camp on Lake Garda is easier when every logistical detail is confirmed before the team arrives. This one-page checklist helps sailing clubs organise boats, accommodation, meals, safety and on-water training around Garda’s reliable thermal winds.

Before You Arrive

  • Confirm dates, number of sailors, coaches, support staff and accompanying parents.
  • Define the training objective: technique, racing, foiling, fitness, team building or selection preparation.
  • Agree the daily schedule, including morning and afternoon sessions, briefings, video review and rest time.
  • Share arrival times, transport details, emergency contacts and dietary requirements in advance.
  • Confirm who is responsible for bookings, payments, keys, access codes and local coordination.

At Univela this is done with the secretary office at info@univela.org

Boats, Storage and Repairs

  • Reserve secure boat storage for the full camp period, with enough space for rigs, foils, trolleys and spares.
  • Confirm whether storage is indoors, in a hangar, under cover or outdoors, and whether it is locked overnight.
  • Arrange a drying area for sails, wetsuits, foils, life jackets and other wet equipment.
  • Check access to a repair area, tools, consumables and a local sailmaker or technician if needed.
  • Agree where charter or borrowed boats will be delivered, rigged and stored.
  • Confirm the availability of a crane or slipway for launching and haul-out, including operating hours and booking procedure.
  • Plan parking and manoeuvring space for vans, trailers and support vehicles close to the storage area.

At Univela this is already included in the standar offer.

Accommodation and Meals

  • Book rooms according to team structure: sailors, coaches, staff and parents.
  • Confirm room capacity, bed configuration, bathrooms, Wi-Fi, laundry and quiet hours.
  • Check the distance and transfer time between accommodation, the sailing venue and classrooms.
  • Arrange breakfast, packed lunches for on-water days and dinner times compatible with training sessions.
  • Communicate allergies, intolerances, vegetarian or vegan needs and athlete nutrition requirements.
  • Confirm whether the restaurant or hotel can provide early breakfasts for morning sessions.

At Univela everything is in the same location and that makes your life really easy.

Classrooms and Briefings

  • Reserve a classroom or meeting room for tactical briefings, rules sessions, video analysis and weather planning.
  • Confirm projector or screen availability, whiteboard, chairs, power sockets and internet connection.
  • Plan space for sail measurement, rig tuning, team meetings and individual feedback.
  • Keep a flexible indoor option for windless, rainy or stormy days.

At Univela just ask for a classroom and the use of the hangar and you are good to go.

On-Water Training

Lake Garda is particularly suitable for structured training because its thermal system often provides northerly wind in the morning and southerly wind in the afternoon. The Pelér typically blows from the north in the early part of the day, while the Ora fills in from the south around midday and continues until sunset.

  • Plan a morning session for the Pelér and an afternoon session for the Ora, while remaining flexible with timings.
  • Confirm the sailing area, launch site, course area and any local restrictions or protected zones.
  • Arrange marks, inflatables, anchors, lines and a mark-laying plan before the first session.
  • Book a charter motorboat or RIB for coaching, safety, video and mark setting.
  • Confirm boat capacity, driver qualifications, fuel arrangements, radio equipment and rescue gear.
  • Define a daily weather-check procedure and a clear “go / no-go” decision process.

At Univela is very easy to train becaue your windy area is 100 meters from the ramp.

Safety and Supervision

  • Prepare a written safety plan with emergency contacts, nearest medical facilities and evacuation procedures.
  • Confirm rescue-boat cover, communication channels, first-aid equipment and qualified safety personnel.
  • Check that all sailors have appropriate personal flotation devices, wetsuits, helmets where required and identification.
  • Establish a sailor check-in and check-out system before and after every session.
  • Define a missing-person procedure, a capsize or injury procedure and a bad-weather recall signal.

At Univela you can the support of the local safety team and we will rescue in a blip.

Under-18 Safeguarding

  • Appoint a designated safeguarding officer or responsible adult for the camp.
  • Collect parental consent forms, medical information, emergency contacts and photo/video permissions.
  • Confirm supervision ratios and overnight arrangements for minors.
  • Ensure coaches and staff follow the club’s safeguarding policy, including appropriate communication with minors.
  • Keep a clear record of who is authorised to collect or accompany each under-18 sailor.
  • Provide parents with the daily schedule, accommodation details and emergency contact number.

At Univela is easy to check on the kids becasue they are all in Campione and cannot outrun the coach.
